This year’s Abel Prize is being awarded to National Academy of Sciences international member Gerd Faltings for introducing powerful tools in arithmetic geometry. Presented annually by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the prize acknowledges groundbreaking scientific achievements within the discipline of mathematics and celebrates exceptional mathematicians and their work. Electricity demand in the United States is increasing while the infrastructure needed to serve that demand is taking longer to build. In a series of webinars hosted by the National Academies Forum on Informed Investment, Technology, and Policy Pathways for the Electricity System and Interdependent Energy Infrastructure, experts pointed to a growing gap between how quickly new demand is emerging and how long it takes to expand generation and transmission systems.

National Academy of Sciences member Charles H. Bennett and international member Gilles Brassard are receiving the A.M. Turing Award for their essential role in establishing the foundations of quantum information science and transforming secure communication and computing. The award, presented by the Association for Computing Machinery, comes with a $1 million prize.

Clinicians Should Focus on Symptom Evaluation and Continuity of Care Following Jet Fuel Releases in Oahu, Says New Report Examining Health Risks from Potential Exposures

News Release

A new National Academies report recommends guidance for clinicians caring for individuals who were potentially exposed to drinking water contaminated by jet fuel accidently released on Oahu, Hawaii, in November 2021. The report also calls for continued environmental oversight of the drinking water system, health research, surveillance of the exposed community, and other efforts to rebuild trust.

PNAS Announces 2025 Cozzarelli Prize Recipients

Six papers published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2025 have been selected to receive the Cozzarelli Prize, which acknowledges papers that reflect scientific excellence and originality and recognizes outstanding contributions to the scientific disciplines represented by the National Academy of Sciences. Papers were chosen from more than 3,600 research articles that appeared in the journal last year.
